Bella Health & Wellness, a non-profit health clinic, secures the right to continue offering abortion pill reversal.

Last month, the approval of another generic mifepristone drug by the FDA rocked the pro-life cause. Yet, in the wake of expansions to abortion access post-Roe, a faith-based health clinic secured a vital pro-life victory in Colorado federal courts. The landmark case challenged the nation’s first ban on abortion pill reversal.

Bella Health & Wellness is a multi-specialty non-profit health clinic that offers high-quality, life-affirming care to individuals and families throughout Denver and greater Colorado. The practice opened in 2014 as an OB-GYN clinic, but has since expanded to include care for men and children.

In addition to routine and acute care, Bella Health & Wellness offers abortion pill reversal, also known as APR. In 2023, a new law deemed APR illegal, calling it “deceptive” and “unprofessional conduct,” essentially prohibiting its practice. The law states that the state medical board does not recognize APR as consistent with accepted medical standards.

Abortion pill reversal is designed to counteract the effects of a chemical abortion. Chemically induced abortions involve two pills, mifepristone and misoprostol, taken over the course of a 24-48 hour period. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks the body’s production of progesterone and induces cervical dilation. Without progesterone, the fetus is deprived of necessary nutrients, rendering the pregnancy nonviable. Misoprostol then induces contractions and delivery of the aborted fetus. If a mother changes her mind about her abortion prior to taking this second pill, administering large doses of progesterone through APR can counter the effects of mifepristone. In many cases, the life of the child can be saved and the pregnancy carried to term.

Under the 2023 law, offering APR now carries serious penalties. Clinics face fines of $20,000 for each violation and providers risk having their professional licenses revoked. Just days after the law passed, Bella Health and Wellness filed a lawsuit against the state. Days later, Bella was granted temporary protections from penalties related to the new law. Those protections allowed them to continue offering APR without repercussions while the legal battle continued.

Over the next two years, The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a non-profit, public interest law firm dedicated to defending religious liberty in the United States and abroad, represented the clinic in the Bella Health & Wellness vs Weiser debate.

In August of 2025, the court ruled in favor of Bella, making the temporary injunction permanent. This ruling was the first of its kind in Colorado, where a judge ruled in favor of abortion pill reversal.

Although the 2023 law still stands, Bella Health and Wellness—along with one Colorado Springs midwife—can continue to offer this life-saving care.

The fight for life in Colorado is far from over, but with nearly 63% of abortions being performed via abortion pill, Bella Health and Wellness’ continued ability to offer APR is certainly an important victory.

With over 30,000 registered patients and a second clinic opening in North Dakota in 2026, Bella’s mission to care for souls—from the unborn to the elderly—is only expanding. Through the advocacy of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and the generosity of supporters, Bella can continue offering life-affirming care to those who need it most.
