Devastating Yarnell fire spurred AZ's largest charitable effort, raising record $13 million; one year later, $12 million has been distributed.

"Donations started pouring in even before the devastating Yarnell Hill Fire was put out. The fire, which left 19 firefighters dead and ripped through the community of Yarnell, spurred the largest community-outreach effort in the state's history, raising more than $13 million for victims and their families. . . . About $12 million of that money has been paid out. Firefighters' families received immediate aid for bills and living expenses and larger grants toward a more secure financial future. Residents of Yarnell have received help with rebuilding and community infrastructure." -- Robert Anglen and Russ Wiles, the Arizona Republic
