Kimo Keawe, the former director of the Hawaii Centers for Independent Living. has been sentenced to almost 2 years in a federal prison for embezzlement of $180K.

"A Honolulu man who directed the now-defunct Hawaii Centers for Independent Living - which had an office on Maui that served 200 people with disabilities - was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison on Thursday for embezzling nearly $180,000 from the charity.

"Mitchell "Kimo" Keawe Jr., 50, was also sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to pay $179,222 in restitution to the U.S. Department of Education.

"Keawe pleaded guilty in June to one count of embezzlement and theft from the nonprofit of more than $153,643 between Oct. 1, 2012, and Sept. 30, 2013. As part of his plea deal, he had to acknowledge in court the total amount he stole -$179,222 from Oct. 4, 2011, to Dec. 20, 2013."--Eileen Chao, The Maui News
