When philanthropy becomes intergenerational "burden": WSJ looks at myriad reasons behind "Spending down the family foundation".

"More philanthropists are choosing to donate all their foundations' assets within their lifetimes. And one of the big drivers behind this trend--other than disinterest [sic] among heirs--is the desire to potentially effect change within their lifetimes, advisers and experts say. About 50 years ago, only 5% of the total assets of America's largest 50 foundations were held by spend-downs, compared to 24% in 2010, according to the Bridgespan Group in Boston." -- Veronica Dagher, the Wall Street Journal
